What is Cantharidin?

Cantharidin is a liquid substance derived from the Blister Beetle. This chemical, when introduced to the treated areas, causes the area to blister and eventually slough off the skin with minimal pain or scarring. Cantharidin is a form of ancient Chinese medicine that has been used for centuries to treat warts like molluscum and other viral infections. It’s important to use Cantharidin only as directed by your provider, as it is a powerful solution.

What to Expect During Cantharidin Treatment

Before your child’s Cantharidin treatment begins, our Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Samantha Casselman, will go over the procedure in its entirety. This is so your child knows exactly what they can expect throughout their treatment. For this treatment, a small amount of the Cantharidin liquid will be placed on each individual molluscum wart all over the body. Placing this liquid is completely painless.

It's important to note that Cantharidin treatments will not be performed on the face or groin. In addition, we will not force treatment upon children who are unwilling to participate. The quantity of warts being treated is at your provider’s discretion.

What to Expect After Cantharidin Treatment

After washing off your child’s Cantharidin treatment, it will take about 24 hours for the blisters to begin to form. We ask that you keep your children’s skin clean and protected from the sun while these blisters form and heal to avoid complications like scarring or infections. After about a week, the blisters will scab over and slough off the body.

The number of Cantharidin treatments your child will need depends on how much molluscum your child needs treated, and the number of treatment sessions recommended by your provider to achieve desired results.
